The Institute
Birla Institute of Scientific Research (BISR) was established in realization of the dreams of visionary
industrialist Mr Braj Mohan Birla. It is involved in fostering and promoting various aspects of Science
and Technology and has multi-functional activities. Apart from Research and Development, it promotes
science through a Museum and a Planetarium. It also has state-of-the-art Convention facility. The
Institute has emerged as a key centre for the promotion of science, art and culture under the patronage
and leadership of Mrs and Mr Ganga Prasad Birla and Mrs and Mr Chandra Kant Birla.
The Institute's activities include:
- Conduct basic and applied research in established and emerging areas.
- Organize quality improvement and customized training programmes.
- Establish and maintain effective linkages with industry, educational and other institutions.
- Organize conferences, symposia, workshops and scientific meetings in the areas of strategic needs of the country.
Keeping in view the global trends and the global opportunities, BISR envisions strengthening its position as a leading R&D Institute in the country by investing in specific infrastructure and human resources. Networking with the leading institutions/industries in the identified thrust areas is one of the important strategies adopted.
Thrust Areas
- Industrial Biotechnology
- Biodiversity and Bioprospecting
- Bioinformatics
- Arid Zone Eco-development
- Natural Resources Management
Besides research, the centre also undertakes various promotional activities viz,
- Provide support to researchers of Rajasthan in the field of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.
- Hold National Conferences.
- Provide Platform for Dissertation for Post Graduate Students.
Bioinformatics Centre
Bioinformatics has emerged today as one of the top professional options for career choice throughout the world.
Being multidisciplinary in nature, it provides scope for a complete exposure to many inter-related disciplines,
and for addressing scores of biological problems. The Bioinformatics Centre at BISR is functioning since early 1998.
The Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, has supported a large Bioinformatics Network, known as BTISnet,
in the country by connecting all the leading research institutes and universities. BISR is a part of the BTISnet,
and has established Sub-Distributed Information Center.
Bioinformatics Centre at BISR has organized many advanced training programs on Biotechnology and Bioinformatics for students, research scholars and teachers. Few of the programs are as follows:
- Computational Methods in Molecular Biology
- Biological Sequence Analysis
- Structural Bioinformatics
- Protein Structure Prediction
- Genomics and Proteomics
- Computer Aided Drug Designing
- Computational Genomics
- Data Mining Techniques in Bioinformatics
- Bioinformatics Programming in PERL
- Algorithms in Bioinformatics
- Genome Informatics
The Centre is equipped with the latest infrastructure for research and training. Each student is provided with
independent computer for work which will contain essential licensed as well as open-source software. It has well
developed LAN facility and the centre is equipped with 2 Mbps leased line connection for internet.
A good library facility containing essential books and journals related to life science research will be
made available to students. The Institute has modern lecture rooms and the laboratories that are air conditioned
with internet facility, mounted LCD projector, slide projector etc., for effective learning.
Students will get an opportunity to participate in various scientific and technical activities of the
institute organized from time to time. They will then get an exposure to the scientific community.
The Course
BISR has launched Post-graduate Diploma Course in Bioinformatics from 2007 with the support of Department
of Information Technology & Communication, Government of Rajasthan. The objective of the course is to provide
students with a comprehensive understanding of the subject and equip them with essential skills in bioinformatics,
which would help them to address successfully the emerging challenges of the subject. The course curriculum is
well balanced in terms of both theoretical and laboratory contents on the subject. The course is designed in such
a way that a student from any of the disciplines mentioned below will be equally benefited by it. Students will be
given various assignments throughout the course to enhance their learning and expression capabilities.
The duration of the course is 12 months, which has been divided into 3 modules. ( Syllabus)
Career Opportunities
Since this is an emerging field in India as well as the rest of the world, there is a great demand in the market for skilled professionals in Bioinformatics and the package offered at entry level is very competitive and considered the best in the market. The Bioinformatics Industry in India is at a high growth stage, and many new companies are gradually entering into the market. Besides, there is a huge demand for students to carry out research in Bioinformatics. All leading Institutes and Universities in India and abroad are working in the area of Bioinformatics and are looking for skilled and trained professionals for carrying out research. A skilled person with proven capabilities and training has bright future in this field.
Eligibility
Being multidisciplinary in nature, Bioinformatics can be taken up as a career by the students coming from a variety of academic background. Minimum qualification required is a Bachelor degree in any branch of science, agriculture, engineering, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary science with at least 55% marks. For reserved category students, this requirement is relaxed to 50% marks . Those who are appearing in the final exam. Additional qualification will be given weightage in selection.
Admission Procedure
The admissions will be based on previous academic records and personal interview. The number of seats available is limited to 20 . Out of this 75% seats are reserved for students who are domiciled in the state of Rajasthan. Reservation for SC, ST, OBC and physically challenged will be as per State Government rules. In case no suitable candidates are found in any reserved category, the vacant seats will be transferred to general category.
